Scented candle - what is it?

.

A scented candle is a traditional candle with the addition of essential oils. Thanks to them, when the candle is lit, a pleasant aroma floats in the air. Scented candles are also used for aromatherapy - they can improve mood and also support the mind.

How to make a scented candle?

.

If you don't want to buy a scented candle, you can make one yourself. This is a great idea, for example, as a gift for a loved one who will certainly appreciate your efforts. For this you will need:

  • wax,
  • .
  • a pot,
  • .
  • scented oils,
  • .
  • bowls,
  • .
  • knot (or string),
  • .
  • additives (e.g. coffee beans, cinnamon sticks, orange slices, cloves)
  • .
  • formula.
  • .

After you have prepared everything you need, you can get started. Your scented candle will be ready in eight steps.

.

    .
  • Fill a pot halfway with water and bring it to a boil.
  • Divide the wax into small pieces, put it in a bowl and "suspend" it over the boiling water.
  • .
  • Stir the wax to speed up the dissolving process.
  • .
  • Gradually add your chosen fragrance oils (about a dozen drops) to the melting wax. You can also use products such as cinnamon, cardamom or orange or vanilla flavours. Stir the mixture thoroughly all the time.
  • .
  • Prepare the mould and line it with your chosen ingredients.
  • .
  • Attach a wick or string to the centre of the bottom and tie the other end to a spoon, for example, and hold it up.
  • .
  • Slowly pour in the wax and set aside to cool.
  • .
  • When the wax has dried, trim the wick to the correct length, remove the mould and you are done!
  • .

Are scented candles harmful?

.

There are no scientific studies to suggest that scented candles are dangerous. Although they do release organic compounds when burned, the amounts are negligible. If you want to make sure your aromatherapy adventure is safe - go for candles without dyes or paraffinand.

The safest are soy scented candles. They do not emit any harmful substances when burned.

.

.

Caution!

Remember that scented candles can cause allergic reactions. In some cases, they can even lead to asthma attacks.

Aromatherapy - what is it?

.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses essential oils. The scents they emit can affect our mood, prevent stress, and protect against feelings of anxietyand

There is still a lack of research on the effects of aromatherapy on health, so I asked Ilona Krzak, MSc in pharmacy, about it.

.

How do essential oils work?

.

Ilona Krzak explains that the therapeutic effects of essential oils depend on their type. What do the different oils affectand?

  • Thieves' oil. This is a combination of cinnamon leaf and bark oil with clove, lemon, eucalyptus and rosemary oils. In addition to its pleasant fragrance, it exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects. It is great for steam inhalation during a cold. In turn, when used in a bath, it relaxes and reduces muscle tension, and when used internally it can improve digestion.
  • .
  • Eucalyptus oil. It has a beautiful, refreshing and invigorating fragrance. It will work well for vapour inhalation for people who struggle with a runny nose or sinus disease. It is best to sprinkle cotton wool with the oil, put it on your nose and inhale the vapour. There may be some pain or irritation involved, but after a short time, the secretions from clogged sinuses will start to drain and the nose will clear up. Eucalyptus oil has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
  • .
  • Tea tree oil. I recommend it for inhalation and treatment of skin conditions or herpes labialis. It disinfects and dries up the resulting "cold sore" and prevents the herpes from progressing.
  • .
  • Lavender oil. It has a relaxing, calming and relaxing effect, and also makes it easier to fall asleep.
  • .
.
Essential oils should not be used on children under 2 years of age, allergy sufferers, asthmatics and people with bronchial hypersensitivity.

Can scented candles be used for aromatherapy?

.

Scented candles contain too small amounts of essential oils to have a therapeutic effect. Nevertheless, they can have a positive effect on our mood and also prevent stress. However, if you want to conduct a therapeutic, aromatherapy session - you will need to stock up on oils.

FAQ

.
. What kind of candles are non-hazardous .

Non-hazardous scented candles are those made from vegetable waxes - palm, coconut, rapeseed or soya. Beeswax candles are also harmless. Therefore, if you want to be sure that a soy candle will not adversely affect your health, choose, for example, soy candles.

An interesting and, more importantly, safe alternative to candles can be scented diffusers, which use essential oils to emit fragrance.

. Where to buy good scented candles? .

Scented candles can be found in many places.

Good scented candles can be purchased at:

.
  • online shop,
  • .
  • shop specialising in the sale of candles,
  • .
  • large stationary shops such as Rossmann, OBI, IKEA, Biedronka or Lidl.
  • .

Remember that you will always have the largest selection of scented candles in online shops.

. Do candles dry out the air? .

Yes, scented candles can dry out the air, although the difference should be negligible. More importantly, when they burn, among other things, smoke and carbon dioxide enter the air, which are harmful in high levels. All substances that are emitted by scented candles reduce air quality. It is therefore important not to burn them for several hours in a row and to ventilate the room well after extinguishing them.

. Is it okay to burn candles in front of an infant? .

No, candles cannot be burned in front of babies or even older children. It's not just the potential harmfulness of the smoke, but the risk of burns. Young children may not understand how fire behaves or inadvertently knock down a candle.

. Is it okay to leave a candle lit overnight? .

No, under no circumstances should you leave a candle lit overnight. Even during the day, if you are burning a candle, you need to keep it under control at all times. Although the flame of a candle looks inconspicuous, an unfortunate turn of events can cause it to cause a fire.

. How long does a candle burn?

The burning time of a candle depends on the amount of soy wax in the jar. The smallest candles will only provide us with fragrance for a few hours. Larger candles can burn for up to 120-160 hours.

. What can you do to keep your candle from smoking?

If your scented candle smokes unusually heavily, it is worth remembering to trim the wick before lighting it. Limit its length to around 5 mm, which will reduce the smokiness and uneven burning. If you want to prevent smoke even more effectively, you can get a wick trimmer and trim the wick systematically.
