Selection Criteria – What Characterises a Good Self-Tanner?

We can expect a lot from modern self-tanners. They should not only give our skin an even tan but also nourish, moisturise, and firm it.

As a cosmetologist, I believe that the most important thing is to provide the skin with as much protection and nutrients as possible, strengthening and hydrating it. Therefore, I especially recommend products that offer the skin more than just colour.
Natalia Stępa

Natalia Stępa cosmetologist

Criteria for choosing the best self-tanners:

  • Ingredients – simple, maximally natural and effective, free from preservatives,
  • Nourishing components – a good self-tanner should also care for the skin,
  • Form and ease of application – everyone should be able to apply a self-tanner, even if it’s their first time,
  • Gradation of colour – it’s nice to have a choice and the ability to control the depth of the tan,
  • Fragrance – the product should not smell bad but should have a scent similar to the best lotions,
  • Reviews – thousands of users and experts will best verify whether a product meets the manufacturer’s promises.

Remember, the final tanning result depends on how you apply the self-tanner, whether you follow the instructions of the specific cosmetic, how you prepare your skin before application, and the condition of your skin. If a product does not meet your expectations – try another one.

Regular use of the lotion maintains the iridescent effects and cares for the skin. It does not dry out or give a tightening sensation like some self-tanners. Self-tanner in a “pill” – opinions of a cosmetologist and dermatologist

Self-tanner, tanning cream, bronzer, – differences

Self-tanner creates an imitation of a tan on the skin through a chemical reaction between the tanning substances and amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin. It contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), erythrulose, or both substances. A common side effect of this reaction is a characteristic odour caused by the DHA content.

Bronzer (or tanning enhancer – both spellings are correct) and tanning cream are the same cosmetic product. Bronzers are gentler in producing a tan than self-tanners. They contain a lower concentration of DHA, which results in less of the characteristic smell often associated with self-tanners. Some bronzers, instead of DHA, contain erythrulose, and others contain both ingredients.

The main difference between a self-tanner and a tanning cream lies in the speed of action and the intensity of the artificial tan. Self-tanners work faster, whereas the cream gradually creates a bronze-golden skin effect sun-kissed.
Natalia Stępa

Natalia Stępa cosmetologist

How does a self-tanner work?

Magic or a chemical reaction?

The substances used in self-tanners are erythrulose and dihydroxyacetone (DHA). They work by reacting with amino acids on the outer, dead layer of the skin. They create an imitation of a tan and do not penetrate into the deeper layers.
Natalia Stępa

Natalia Stępa cosmetologist

Erythrulose is a modern self-tanning agent that reacts with certain amino groups in keratin within the skin, resulting in a uniform tan without streaks or unevenness.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a sugar-based compound with natural self-tanning properties. It occurs in plant and animal cells in the form of phosphate.

How to maintain a tan for longer?

Natalia Stępa offers tips on how to prepare the body for self-tanner application and how to care for the skin so you can enjoy a beautiful tan for as long as possible.

Choose the right self-tanner for your needs

Pay attention to your skin tone and skin type, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific self-tanner, which may offer several shades. For example:

  • Dry and atopic skin requires a self-tanner with a simple formula and hydrating properties.
  • Dark skin tones require stronger self-tanners for the effects to be visible at all.
  • Problematic skin needs lightweight formulas that do not clog pores.
  • Pale or dull skin can be touched up with a self-tanner containing shimmer particles to give it a radiant appearance.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my skin type?
  • What is my skin condition?
  • What does my skin need?
  • What effect do I want to achieve?

By following these guidelines, it will be easier for you to select products and choose the best self-tanner for yourself. Once you select a product, find out how to prepare for application to preserve your sun-kissed glow for as long as possible.

Prepare your body

  • 24 hours before applying the self-tanner, exfoliate or dry brush to remove dead skin cells.
  • 24 hours before the treatment, avoid using soap, products with high pH, oil-based cosmetics, or moisturisers. These products can create a barrier on the skin, potentially blocking the rapid action of tanning agents.
  • If you plan to depilate, do so two days earlier to allow the skin to regenerate and pores to close. Applying self-tanner too soon after depilation may result in black spots on the skin.
  • Before applying self-tanner, the skin should be clean and dry. Moisturising balm should only be applied to knees and elbows, as these areas tend to absorb more tanning substances.

Care for your skin after the treatment

  • The skin needs daily moisturising and nourishing. Use good cosmetics containing ceramides, urea, hyaluronic acid, elastin, as well as butters (e.g., shea, cocoa) and oils (e.g., jojoba, argan).
  • Avoid exfoliants, dry brushing, and vigorous scrubbing with a sponge – these remove the tan along with dead skin cells.
  • Do not bathe in hot water – softened skin exfoliates more easily. Avoid swimming pools and jacuzzis, as chlorinated water can cause the tan to fade.
  • Use products that prolong the tan, such as specialised lotions, elixirs, or milks.

Did you know you can make a homemade self-tanner? There are many recipes online based on coffee, cocoa, or tea mixed with butter (e.g., shea) or oils (e.g., argan). Check what you have in your kitchen and get started!

Are self-tanners safe?

Yes, self-tanners are safe if you choose a high-quality product that not only gives the skin a beautiful glow but also nourishes and moisturises it. A self-tanner is a safe way to achieve a lovely skin tone, unlike tanning beds or direct sun exposure.

Dermatologist’s opinion on self-tanners

“Chronic exposure to UVA and UVB radiation, apart from its carcinogenic effects, also contributes to premature skin ageing . For patients who like to have a tan all year round, I strongly recommend safe, high-quality self-tanners that are beneficial for health”, explains Joanna Kowalska-Brocka.

“Self-tanners give the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis, a tan. Since the epidermis constantly renews itself through shedding, the artificial tan lasts on the skin for 3–5 days. This effect can be extended if a scrub is used beforehand or if the skin is regularly moisturised”, she adds.

Unlike traditional tanning or using tanning beds, self-tanners do not damage our cellular DNA and thus do not cause skin cancer . Remember that using a self-tanner does not protect against UV rays, so I always recommend applying SPF 50 filters.
Joanna Kowalska-Brocka

Joanna Kowalska-Brocka Dermatologist

Goodbye greasy self-tanners with unpleasant odour, playing roulette – will there be a stain or not? Modern facial self-tanners, apart from a natural, streak-free tan, also provide proper nourishment, hydration, and skin regeneration.

FAQ

How to apply self-tanner?

Apply self-tanner best on the skin using a special glove or sponge, to avoid unevenness and streaks. Perform circular, thorough movements in good lighting to see where you are spreading the product. Also, apply to hands, feet, and neck. Do not overuse the self-tanner and avoid applying a thick layer.

How to apply self-tanner without a glove?

If you do not have a self-tanner applicator glove, try to apply the product in sections, slowly, with circular motions. In problematic areas (ankles, knees, elbows), use only the fingertips. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly after application.

How to remove self-tanner?

Effective home methods for removing self-tanner or stains include: performing a coarse exfoliation on the skin, compresses with lemon juice mixed with baking soda, or wiping the skin with an alcohol-based toner. It is very important to thoroughly moisturise and nourish the skin after the treatment.

Is self-tanner harmful?

Self-tanners with higher DHA content have a more negative impact on skin hydration compared to those with lower DHA levels. Do not overuse self-tanners and remember to regularly moisturise your skin.

Is it safe to use self-tanner during pregnancy?

Yes, pregnant women can use self-tanner. However, they should pay attention to the ingredients: free from parabens, essential oils, and with the lowest possible DHA content. The formulation should be enriched with moisturising and regenerating ingredients. Recommended self-tanners for pregnant women include Mokosh, Marc Inbane.

How long does self-tanner last?

Self-tanner usually remains on the skin for 3 to 7 days. Its durability depends on skin preparation before application, product quality, and regular skin moisturisation after the treatment. To extend the effect, perform a peel before applying and maintain daily hydration with a cream or balm.

How soon does self-tanner start to work?

Self-tanner begins to work when DHA (the main tanning ingredient in these products) interacts with the outer layer of dead skin cells. This usually takes from 6 to 10 hours, depending on the individual.

Does self-tanner block tanning?

No, self-tanner does not block tanning. It works on the surface of the skin but does not prevent the sun's rays from acting on the skin and does not protect it from harmful UV radiation. When using self-tanners, apply SPF filters to protect your skin.

Does self-tanner cause side effects?

Yes, self-tanner can cause side effects such as uneven skin tone, usually due to improper application of the cosmetic. Some individuals may be allergic to DHA (a component of many self-tanners), which can cause a rash, dizziness, skin itching, and coughing.

Does self-tanner wash off?

Yes, self-tanner washes off. This happens naturally after a few days as the skin exfoliates. You can also remove self-tanner at any time using a peel, lemon and soda compresses, or dedicated cosmetics.

What is the best self-tanner for vitiligo?

The best self-tanner for vitiligo effectively covers skin tone irregularities and moisturises and nourishes the skin. A self-tanner should have a simple composition, preferably containing erythrulose (a natural tanning agent). Besides self-tanners, people with vitiligo can also use special creams or fluids.

Self-tanner and tanning – what should I know?

Using self-tanner is healthier than tanning because we are not exposed to harmful UV radiation, which damages the skin and can lead to cancer. However, do not overuse self-tanners, as large amounts of DHA can dry out the skin.
