.Facial skin doesn't take it lightly: cold in winter, sweltering in summer, and year-round alternating between air conditioning and heating. Not to mention genes, predispositions and the cosmetics you apply.
A good cream should protect like armour, be light as fluff, soothe like a compress, and also look like it's not there.
It's not easy to reconcile all of this, especially as your skin also has its own individual needs - needs that will change with the time of day, the year and the circumstances (is the best cream so great if putting make-up on it is like drawing on a pudding?).
Together, you can find the right cream for your skin.
With aesthetic cosmetology specialist Karolina Kwiatkowska, we have selected for you up to 24 of the best face creams currently available on the market. In addition to the list, you'll also get loads of tips and advice on how to choose the best face cream for you.

How to choose the perfect facial cream
.
Face cream is a must have for your skincare rituals, as your skin needs hydration and valuable nutrients every day. The right face cream will help slow down the ageing process. It will keep your skin firm and supple and reduce the number and visibility of wrinkles.
Just which face cream to choose? It can seem really difficult at first - after all, there are so many products on the market and the adverts tempt you with promises. Thanks to cosmetologist Karolina Kwiatkowska, you will see how to do it step-by-step:
Determine your skin type
.
Even if a particular cream worked for your friend, it doesn't have to work for you. Every skin is unique, with its own story and individual needs.
Every skin type is unique.
Depending on age and its specific characteristics, there are several skin types:
- Normal skin - rarely found in adults. It has an even tone, is smooth, adequately moisturised and toned and wrinkle-free. A light moisturiser with sunscreen is sufficient here. .
- Dry skin - rough and even rough to the touch, with a tendency to flake, is dull due to reduced sebum production. It requires strong moisturisation and lubrication, as well as ingredients to rebuild the lipid layer and nutrients. .
- Oily and acne-prone skin - is thicker, shinier, with dilated pores and a tendency to blackheads, and sebum is produced too abundantly. The best cream for this skin should have a light texture and ingredients that inhibit sebum production, tighten pores, as well as having a mattifying and antibacterial effect. .
- Mixed skin - there are areas of dry and oily skin on the face. Most often around the forehead, nose and chin (T-zone) the skin becomes oily, and on the temples and cheeks it dries out quickly. In this case, it is best to use two creams that address the needs of each area. .
- Sensitive skin - is extremely tender, often tight, irritated and red. Sometimes it even itches and pinches. Extremely susceptible to external stimuli. The cream should be rich in soothing ingredients and high levels of SPF protection. .
- Vascular skin - it shows a lot of redness, especially around the cheeks and nose. It can also be tense and burning. It reacts quickly and intensely to weather conditions and temperature changes. A cream for vascular skin should have soothing, calming and capillary-sealing properties. .
- Mature and ageing skin - is tired, flabby, with less regenerative capacity and more visible wrinkles, as well as more spots and discolouration. It requires highly moisturising and nourishing ingredients that will have a lifting effect. .
Remember that along with your face cream, you should also use eye cream separately.
What ingredients to look for in a face cream?
.
Depending on your skin type, the purpose of the cream and the results you want, you will reach for different products. It is a good idea for them to have the following substances in their composition:
- Glycerin -one of the most importantand ingredients in moisturisers, which will further improve your skin's elasticity and support the rebuilding of the epidermal barrier.
- Ceramides and hyaluronic acid - both of these ingredients occur naturally in your skin and play an important moisturising role.
- Niacinamide - a substance related to vitamin B3, of which niacin is a derivative. Its main function is to stimulate ceramide production and rebuild the hydrolipid barrier. In addition to this, it reduces water loss in your skin, firms it and visibly reducesand discolouration.
- Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) - soften the skin and help to exfoliate the epidermis, and help cream ingredients penetrate deeper. Plus, they will smoothand your texture and even out skin tone. They also support the reduction of wrinkles.
- Retinoids - will stimulate cells and support collagen production. They are the best researched ingredients in terms of anti-ageing action. They are key especially in night creams.
- Vitamin C - a great antioxidantand that will help skin stay smooth, provide a brightening effect and even reverse the effects of UV rays. .
- Vitamin E - softens the skin, reduces dryness and has an antioxidant effect. It works best in combination with vitamin C, making it one of the most effective duos in daily skin care.
- Vitamin E - softens the skin and reduces dryness.
- Resveratrol - has antioxidant propertiesand that will help fight the effects of prolonged and excessive stress, which negatively affects your complexion.
- Lactic acid - one of the alpha-hydroxy acids that has, among other things, exfoliating and antibacterial properties. Use it at a concentration of 12%and to make your skin firmer. A lower concentration (5%) will give you more superficial effects, such as hydrating the epidermis. It will work well if you have acne-prone skinand. .
- Salicylic acid - works great on blackheads and because of its exfoliating properties, is an important ingredient if you have acne-prone skin. .

What shouldn't a face cream contain?
.
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, avoid oils, waxes or petrolatum (petroleum jelly). They are too aggravating and can worsen the condition of your skin.
- Fragrances and perfumes - can cause irritation and allergic reactions.
- Fragrances and perfumes - can cause irritation and allergic reactions.
- Retinoic acid - potent anti-ageing ingredientand with high irritant potential.
- Salicylic acid - can irritate sensitive skin and cause other side effectsand, such as dryness or erythema.
- Methylparaben and parabens - these are primarily preservatives, which can cause local allergic reactionsand and clog pores. .
.
Don't be afraid of a long formulation
.
You may think that a simple formulation is a good formulation. Not necessarily. If you're looking for products that are highly moisturising, anti-wrinkle, anti-ageing or need to use specialised dermocosmetics, the list of ingredients will definitely be longer. Don't be discouraged by this. Instead, ask for support from a specialist - be it a dermatologist, pharmacist or cosmetologist - who can help determine whether a particular product will be good for you.
Ranking matters
.
The mere presence of an ingredient on the list, will not give you confidence that it is in the right concentration. You need to take a look at where each ingredient has landed on the list.
Engredients are always listed from highest to lowest concentration, so if you find a problematic or potentially irritating substance in one of the top five places - don't buy it!"
If you want to buy a cream because of a particular ingredient and it is towards the end of the list, leave it out. There simply isn't enough of it to have the desired effect.
If you want to buy a cream because of a particular ingredient, leave it out.
If you are not sure what type of face cream you need, consult a dermatologist or cosmetologist. This will help you find out what type of skin you have, give you a better understanding of your skin's needs and help you begin to choose the right cosmetics more effectively.
Facial creams for the face are a great way to help your skin.
Facial creams - a daily skincare essential
.
Depending on the needs of your skin and the results you want, there are many types of face creams to choose from. Each has its own characteristics in terms of both composition and formula.
Day and night face creams
.
This is the basic distinction of face creams. They differ primarily in their purpose and what they are supposed to do for your skin. A night face cream is supposed to nourish. Day creams are supposed to protect.
Moisturising creams
.
Moisturising cream is one of the most versatile products. Its role is even crucial in daily skincare. Hence, every good cream is, in the main, a moisturiser.
It is a moisturiser.
His primary task is primarily to protect the skin from moisture loss. The key to the effectiveness of such creams is the balance between two types of moisturisers - emollients (acting from the outside, they lubricate and regenerate the skin, forming the so-called occlusive layer) and humectants (acting from the inside, they "draw" water from the deeper layers, bind it and deliver it to the stratum corneum).
The key to the effectiveness of such creams is the balance between two types of moisturisers.
Effective emollients include: squalaneand, petroleum jelly, paraffin, phospholipids, vegetable butters and oils or natural waxes. Humectants to look for are mainly: glycerine, hyaluronic acid, urea, trehalose or allantoin and sorbitol .

Facial moisturisers
.
A good facial sunscreen should be broad spectrum. Ideally, it should have a protective effect against both UVA and UVB rays and also have a high SPF, or Sun Protection Factor - ideally a value of 50.
Find out more about sunscreens in the article: Facial sunscreen: TOP10 and cosmetologist recommendations.
Protection creams
.
Adjust your face cream according to the season. In summer, reach for creams with sunscreen, you know. But in autumn and winter, your facial skin care should change slightly. Then, it is better to choose creams with a greasier consistency and a small amount of water - these will prove useful in cold weather, wind and frequent temperature changes, when the skin becomes dry, flaky, tight and blood vessels burst. It is also worth providing the skin with the nutrients it needs.
Engredients to look for in protective creams for winter are:
.
- natural vegetable oils,
- allantoinand, .
- panthenol , .
- hyaluronic acid, .
- vitamin K, .
- vitamin PP, .
- vitamin E, .
- sunscreen filters, .
- ceramides, .
- .
Soothing creams for irritated and atopic skin
- .
Irritated and atopic skin needs above all to be soothed, protected, lubricated and moisturised. Therefore, in such cosmetics, look for ingredients that will bind water, rebuild the hydro-lipid barrier and inhibit TEWL (transepidermal water loss, which is the amount of water that leaves our body through perspiration or evaporation - a healthy person losesand its usually about 300-400 ml per day).
The best choice for irritated and atopic skin is the following.
The best choice here would be emollients, classified as dermocosmetics, which will help regenerate the altered skin, reduce itching, burning and the feeling of excessive skin tightness. Plus, they are fully hypoallergenic.
- .
The ingredients to look for in creams for irritated and atopic skin are:
- ceramides, .
- linoleic acidand, .
- tartaric acid , .
- natural oils ,
- urea , .
- sodium hyaluronate, .
- .
Facial colour creams
- .
They go by many names: BBB cream, CC, colouring, toning, correcting. All these cosmetics have one element in common. It is the addition of pigments that even out the skin tone. On the one hand, they care, on the other, they improve the appearance of the complexion. Many of them have a high SPF filter (at least 30), so they are ideal for summer. In addition, they save a lot of time (especially in the morning), as they can successfully replace foundation.

Brightening creams
- .
A brightening face cream is supposed to help grey and tired skin. Such a product should have smoothing, gently exfoliating, blemish-reducing and hydrating properties. Then your skin will be naturally nourished and look younger and fresher.
The ingredients to look for in brightening creams are:
For a glow effect, pearl powder, mica, particles and light-scattering pigments are added to the creams.
A glow cream is a great base for your make-up - the particles diffuse light and give the impression of perfectly hydrated skin. "You can use it in two ways: either apply the cream and then your foundation, or mix the cream with your foundation to make it even lighter and provide a more luminous glow," advises Karolina Kwiatkowska.
The cream is a great way to set your makeup.
Cleansing and exfoliating creams
- .
Exfoliating the epidermis, or exfoliation, is of great importance in skin care. It helps it to cleanse naturally, as well as give it the right tone and glow. It is also worth using if you are struggling with post-acne discolouration. Those with sensitive and vascular skin should be wary of them - especially products with acids in the formulation.
Engredients to look for in cleansing and exfoliating creams are:
- malic acidand, .
- salicylic acid , .
- ferulic acid ,
- glycolic acid ,
- PHA acids, .
- retinol, .
- natural extracts (such as peach , pomegranate or cucumber ).
- .
- .
Creams for acne-prone skin
- .
Their main function is to soothe inflammation and prevent new inflammation, as well as regulating sebum secretion. An acne cream should contain antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and soothing ingredients to lighten shallow scars, as well as calm the lesions and soothe redness.
Acne cream should be formulated with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and soothing ingredients.
Engredients to look for in acne skin creams are:
.
- zinc, .
- d-panthenol, .
- PHA acidsand, .
- vitamin A and its derivatives, .
- activated carbon, .
- niacinamide, .
Check also whether collagen will help with acne.
Anti-aging and rejuvenating creams
.
Anti-aging creams will not stop the ageing process, but they can significantly slow it down and thus improve the condition and appearance of the skin.
The ingredients to look for in anti-ageing creams are:
.
- vitamin C, .
- retinoland, .
- coenzyme Q10, .
- hyaluronic acid, .
- collagen, .
- niacinamide, .
- peptides, .

FAQ
.Good face cream for men - what to choose?
.Men's skin is better hydrated and nourished and less prone to ageing than women's. And that means slightly different skincare - especially as men's skin has more collagen strands and more layers of epidermis. Although face creams for men have similar ingredients, they differ in formulation and texture. It is light, almost gel-like and does not leave a greasy film. Most men tend to go for lotions and moisturisers rather than deeply nourishing creams with lipids.
What should a good face cream for babies be like?
.Baby's skin is very delicate, so baby face cream should be a staple of daily care. Choose those with the appropriate approvals and certificates (e.g. from the Mother and Child Institute, the Children's Health Centre or the National Institute of Hygiene). Such a cream should have a natural composition, as short as possible, a high SPF filter and be hypoallergenic so that it does not irritate the baby's skin.
Can I use facial cream during pregnancy?
.Of course you can! Remember to choose the right formula though, as the active ingredients, penetrate the skin and can harm the developing baby.
Pregnancy face cream should not contain salicylic acid, vitamin A and its derivatives (retinol and retinoids), soybean oil, essential oils, parabens, caffeine, AHA acids or tetracyclines, all of which are present in acne creams.
.Safe substances to look for in cream formulations include vitamin E, rose oil, panthenol, chamomile extract or vitamin C.
.What cream for dry facial skin to choose?
.If you have very dry skin, dermocosmetics and creams with potent moisturisers such as hyaluronic acid, urea, glycerine or aloe vera will work best. In addition, look for lubricating ingredients that will protect the skin from water loss and irritation (natural butters and oils, waxes, petroleum jelly).
.Soothing substances will also be indispensable (allantoin, d-panthenol or chamomile and calendula extracts), as well as substances regenerating and rebuilding the epidermis, i.e. ceramides and lipids. It is also worth taking advantage of the beneficial effects of B vitamins, vitamins A and E or plant extracts.
What face cream to use during chemotherapy?
.Creams and cosmetics for people undergoing radio or chemotherapy should, above all, strengthen the hydrolipidic layer of the skin, have high SPF protection, be PH neutral, and contain natural ingredients with soothing, calming and moisturising properties. Therefore, look for substances such as emollients, lipids, vegetable oils, ceramides, urea, allantoin or panthenol on labels.
.What facial cream to use for Hashimoto's?
.The skin is a reflection of our health and all hormonal changes. In the case of thyroid disease, this manifests as itchiness, dry skin (especially on the elbows, hands and knees), as well as a tendency to rashes, acne or premenstrual facial swelling, among other symptoms.
Cosmetics for skin care or face cream should have lubricating, regenerating and highly moisturising properties. They will help to reduce roughness, strengthen the hydrolipidic layer of the epidermis and maintain the correct balance of the skin. Avoid creams and preparations with alcohol, preservatives or artificial colourings.
.Adequate diet will also be an important element. It is advisable to plan the specific measures and therapy together with your endocrinologist, dietician and cosmetologist.
Consider the following
Will coconut oil work as a face cream?
.Coconut oil has many health-promoting properties: it moisturises, protects (thanks to the presence of linoleic acid, or vitamin F) and is antibacterial (thanks to lauric acid). Its emollient structure makes it suitable for certain skin types (dry, normal) as a night moisturiser. However, it is comedogenic, meaning it clogs your pores. As a result, it can cause acne, so you need to watch how your skin reacts.
What face cream to use after acids?
.Facial care after acid treatments should be done in two ways. On the one hand, you need to ensure that you are properly moisturised, and on the other, you need to protect yourself from external factors. Therefore, the best post-acid facial cream will be one that is intensively and deeply moisturising, with high SPF (preferably 50 and above), and at the same time with a gentle and lightweight formula that will not overtax the skin.
Which face cream under make-up will be best?
.Makeup creams should primarily be moisturising and soothing. In addition, it is a good idea that they are absorbed quickly, do not leave a sticky layer or greasy film, and do not roll off.
How long does a face cream take to absorb?
The absorption time of a cream will depend on its consistency and formula. It is assumed that the minimum time required for all ingredients to be absorbed is at least 5 minutes. Water-based creams with the addition of tiny liposomes or so-called penetration promotersand will absorb faster, while those with the addition of, for example, hyaluronic acid or collagen, which are made up of large molecules, will absorb more slowly.

.
Why does facial cream roll off?
.Rolling, rolling or 'greasing' manifests itself when small lumps or rollers of cream begin to form on the face that has not absorbed properly. This is most often the case if you apply it incorrectly: apply too much or cover up too quickly with successive layers of cosmetics. The order of application can also be a problem - apply water-based cosmetics first. Other problems can include not cleansing and exfoliating your face, poor product selection or inadequate storage.
What are the symptoms of facial cream sensitisation?
.Symptoms of sensitisation or allergy to face cream will usually be limited to the areas of application. The most common reactions are redness and erythema, itching, increased dryness, burning, swelling or flaking of the skin. Pimples, pustules or blisters may also appear. Of course, the reaction may not be immediate, so observe the skin for a few days after the first application.
