The article is divided into two parts.
- The first part reviews available tablets for supporting erection (erection) and potency. The comparison was prepared jointly with pharmacy graduate Ilona Krzak.
- The second part provides comprehensive information about erectile and potency disorders and how to treat them. This section was created with the expert support of Dr. Witold Tomaszewski and sexologist Magdalena Tyrała.
Let’s clarify a few terms to help you understand the indications and applications of medicines and supplements in this overview.
- Potency refers to the ability to experience sexual responses: arousal, excitement, and erection (full erection) necessary for sexual intercourse.
- Potency disorders manifest as lack of arousal, decreased or absent interest in sex, lack of erection, problems reaching orgasm (delayed or premature ejaculation), pain during intercourse.
- Erection (rigid penis) involves blood flow to the penis, allowing it to stiffen and be ready for sexual intercourse.
- Erectile dysfunction (formerly called impotence) is the cause of potency disorders and manifests as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection and to perform sexual intercourse.
Criteria for selection
There is no single best tablet for potency or erection – each medicine or supplement will work differently for different people. You may need to try several products before finding the one suited to your needs. When preparing this overview, we considered:
- Active substance of the medicine – the ingredient that exerts a specific effect. The medicines listed below, thanks to these substances, have scientifically proven properties supporting erection,
- Dosage per tablet – options include low and higher doses to best match your needs,
- Availability – all products are readily available in physical and online pharmacies (which is important if you are shy about purchasing medication in person),
- Price – tablets vary in price range, so everyone can find a product within their budget.
Substances used in erection medications
All the tablets for potency described below contain one of two substances – sildenafil or tadalafil. Both act immediately and on-demand, supporting the achievement and maintenance of an erection.
|
Substance |
When does it start to work? |
How long does it last? |
Properties |
Most common side effects |
|
tadalafil |
After 30 min. |
Up to 36 hours |
Rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. It causes dilation of blood vessels during stimulation of the penis, increasing blood flow. This helps achieve and maintain an erection. |
headaches, nasal congestion, nasal mucosa congestion, indigestion, nausea, back and muscle pain, hot flashes |
|
sildenafil |
After one hour |
Up to 12 hours |
Absorbs more slowly than tadalafil but also promotes blood vessel dilation during stimulation, increasing blood flow and supporting erection. |
headaches, nasal congestion, nasal mucosa congestion, indigestion, nausea, back and muscle pain, hot flashes |
- Both medications will not work without sexual arousal. Stimulation (e.g., touch, excitement) is necessary to achieve an erection.
- These substances do not act as aphrodisiacs and do not influence libido (they are not tablets for sexual desire).
- Tadalafil is better suited if you want spontaneous sex or plan several sexual activities within a day, as this substance acts faster and its effect lasts longer.
- Do not combine these two substances.
The second part of the article explains the exact mechanism of action of these substances, contraindications, and side effects.
Over-the-counter tablets (medications) for men's erectile dysfunction
The mechanism of action of these tablets involves increasing blood flow to the penis. This occurs through the dilation of blood vessels in the penis.

Over-the-counter tablets (dietary supplements) for men's erection
In Poland, there are dietary supplements that manufacturers attribute with properties supporting erection. Their compositions usually contain popular amino acids and extracts or extracts from plants. Unfortunately, these products show minimal likelihood of inducing an immediate erection.
Dietary supplements do not guarantee achieving the claimed effects, unlike medicines. This is due to different approval procedures for sale, their intended use (medications treat, while dietary supplements supplement potential deficiencies), and quality control of active substances.
Check what popular dietary supplements for erection contain and assess whether they will be more useful in the bedroom or… at the gym.
Summary
Dietary supplements for erection are products that are more useful at the gym than in the bedroom. Popular amino acids L-arginine and L-citrulline support muscle pump, aid in recovery, and improve strength performance, but do not induce an erection.
Consuming extracts or extracts from ginseng, maca root, or buzdyganek makes sense only with systematic supplementation. They will not produce any effect if used sporadically. To learn how to harness their potential in the bedroom, read the section below on Dietary Supplements for Men's Potency.

In a nutshell:
- Over-the-counter medicines for erection containing sildenafil or tadalafil effectively support the formation of an erection.
- Consult a doctor before use to determine the appropriate dosage.
- Blue pills for potency are so-called generic medicines of Viagra. They contain the same active substance (sildenafil) as the original product.
- Many preparations claiming to be Viagra can be purchased online. Be cautious with such claims and buy products from trusted sources.
- Before purchasing an erection medication, try supplementing with amino acids and natural extracts. They have fewer contraindications and side effects and may be sufficient in your case.
Over-the-counter medications for men's potency
In this part of the article, you will read about medicines and dietary supplements aimed at long-term supporting sexual health and reducing symptoms of potency disorders.
Along with ageand men may experience problems with sexual desire (libido).
Symptoms of potency disorders and decreased sexual desire include:
- lack of interest in sex,
- reduced desire,
- difficulty achieving sexual arousal,
- inability to have a satisfying sexual intercourse,
- difficulty achieving an erection or orgasm,
- lack of interest in other sexual activities, e.g., masturbation.
These symptoms may be associated with a decline in the steroid hormone – dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in serumand. Taking medications containing DHEA:
- improvesand sexual performance and the ability to achieve an erection,
- raisesand serum testosterone levels,
- positively influencesand mood.
A good over-the-counter medication for potency may be helpful. Which preparations contain the hormone DHEA?
Dietary Supplements for Men's Potency
If you feel exhausted, have no desire for sex, and would like to improve your sexual health – consider dietary supplements for men's potency. In this overview, you will find which tablets are available, what they contain, and how they work.
Selection Criteria: what to look for when purchasing a dietary supplement?
When searching for the best preparation for yourself, pay attention to several important criteria. We have prepared suggestions for dietary supplements for potency, taking into account:
- ingredients – the product's composition should include essential substances with targeted action (in this case, support for potency),
- quality of active ingredients – ingredients should be in the most bioavailable form for the body to maximise the effectiveness of the substance,
- scientifically proven effectiveness of ingredients – the composition may be impressively long, but not necessarily effective in action,
- additional ingredients – while supporting potency is most important, we appreciate the inclusion of other vitamins and minerals necessary for men.
Dietary supplements may affect each individual differently. If a product does not meet your expectations after a few weeks of use, change it.
Doctors Hate It… So Which Products Should You Be Wary of Online
Ready for an ejaculation like a porn star?
Prepare for an erection you won't be able to stop.
Legal premium-grade product. Strong tablets for potency!
These are just a few slogans that tempt consumers to purchase erectile dysfunction products online. An erection you won't be able to stop sounds alarming, and the more often legal appears in the description, the more doubts it raises.
Supplements marketed online for erectile function such as: Ferrari 200, Promaxil, Prosent 600, Erotabs, Vigordic, Topmen, Viagra in liquid form – promise incredible results. However, be cautious – when you read the ingredients and check the sources of purchase, a red flag should go up.
What should you pay attention to when buying erectile products online?
- Source of purchase. The names of some online stores often reference pharmacies or medical institutions, but they have nothing to do with them. If you want to buy a legal erectile product, purchase it from verified sources (e.g., pharmacies, official online pharmacy stores).
- Product ingredients. Many of them are based on similar compositions of amino acids and plant ingredients. Pay attention to standardisation. Do not buy products that provide no information about their ingredients at all.
- Manufacturer’s claims regarding efficacy. Some product descriptions suggest exceptional effects. Unfortunately, the claimed properties are often not supported by scientific research. Exotic-sounding plants or compounds on the packaging are usually common, easily obtainable ingredients.
The more cheesy and vulgar the advertisement for a potency product, the less likely it is that the product will actually work.
Are there tablets for women's erectile dysfunction?
Women also experience and sexual dysfunction. The most common symptoms include decreased interest in sex, difficulty achieving orgasm, and withdrawal from other forms of sexual activity, such as masturbation.
Effective treatment of these disorders involves a holistic and personalised approach to the patient. It should include blood tests, selection of appropriate medications, supplementation, psychotherapy, and changes in lifestyle and diet.
Currently, there is one medication for women's erectile dysfunction – Addyi (also known as Flibanserin), but it is not available in Poland. It contains the organic chemical compound flibanserinand, which acts directly on the brain. It increases dopamine levels and stimulates sexual arousal.
Tablets for sexual desire in women are referred to as the "pink pill" or the "Viagra for women".
Women can also purchase over-the-counter libido-enhancing tablets. Available preparations contain L-arginine and a blend of natural plant extracts. If your partner is experiencing sexual health issues, encourage her to visit a doctor and undergo routine examinations.
Erection in a nutshell… of knowledge
For many people, conversations about sexual health problems are still embarrassing.
In this part of the article, I will serve you a factual overview, which I hope you will take in first, before purchasing medication. You will learn everything about erectile disorders and how to regain sexual health.
Erectile disorders in men
According to scientific data problems with erections can affect up to 20% of men worldwide. This is a figure we know. But how many gentlemen suffer in silence and are ashamed to seek support?
Erectile dysfunction is one of the causes of potency issues, alongside ejaculation disorders and other sexual dysfunctions. In the past, erectile problems were colloquially called impotence. Sexologists have moved away from this terminology because the word impotent has become pejorative and very hurtful to many men.
Magdalena Tyrałasexologist
Causes
Problems with erections can have both physical and psychological origins.
Erectile problems are not only an issue for men over 50+. Unfortunately, more and more young men suffer from this unpleasant ailment.
In Poland, approximately 16% of men between the ages of 20 and 70 experience erectile problems – in total about 3 million adults. In younger men, the disorder is more often psychogenic, whereas in older men, the cause is usually underlying illnesses such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, or hypertension, urological or hormonal issues.
Magdalena Tyrałasexologist
Remember – prolonged sadness can be a symptom of serious disorders.

Symptoms
We speak of erectile disorders when the following symptoms occur:
- absence of an erection and inability to have sexual intercourse,
- inability to maintain an erection long enough to complete full sexual intercourse.
Important
Despite the presence of erectile issues during intercourse, you may still be able to achieve an erection at other times, e.g., at night or after waking up.
Diagnosis
If you have trouble achieving or maintaining an erection, or do not enjoy sexual activity, it is advisable to consult your GP. The first step towards diagnosis will be basic tests.
What tests should be performed?
- blood count,
- glucose level,
- lipid profile,
- urinalysis.
For a doctor, the information gathered during the medical interview is very important. We understand that this may be embarrassing, but try to answer questions honestly. Erectile dysfunction is a health problem like any other. Honest conversation allows the doctor to better order further diagnostics and establish a treatment plan.
After receiving the results, your internist may refer you to a specialist for further diagnostics.
Treatment
Depending on the causes of erectile dysfunction, a consultation with:
- urologist (treats diseases of the urinary and reproductive systems),
- andrologist (treats male reproductive system disorders),
- sexologist, psychologist (assist in treating psychological causes),
- psychiatrist (helps if erectile issues are due to depression, for example).
It has been known for a long time that the macho culture still prevails. Men must always succeed, whether it concerns handling life or bedroom matters. Such stereotypes often make men ashamed to seek help from a specialist, especially since erectile problems attack their self-esteem and self-worth.

What is the treatment for erectile failure?
Substances from the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors group are used in the treatment of erectile disorders. These are the so-called first-line medications for erectile problems. The most popular and commonly used in preparations are:
- sildenafil – the famous ingredient in Viagra, the first substance to treat erectile problems,
- tadalafil – a compound with similar action to sildenafil, differing in structure and duration of effect.
Other substances include vardenafil and avanafil – available by prescription only.
How do sildenafil and tadalafil work?
These substances affect the dilation of blood vessels during stimulation of the penis, increasing its blood flow. As a result, they help achieve and maintain an erection. Importantly, sexual stimulation (arousal, stimulation) is necessary to achieve an erection – the medications do not cause it on their own.
Scientists have discovered that a small concentration of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) dissolved in a vase of water can double the longevity of cut flowers, keeping them upright even a week beyond their natural lifespan.

Indications for use
These substances are used in men over 18 years old who suffer from erectile disorders. They manifest as an inability to achieve or maintain an erection for the duration necessary for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
Sildenafil is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension . Tadalafil is administered for the treatment of moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia in men and pulmonary hypertension .
Contraindications for use
The list of contraindications for these substances is long – therefore, I strongly encourage you to consult a doctor before purchasing medication on your own.
Contraindications for the use of sildenafil and tadalafil:
- age under 18 years,
- hypersensitivity to the active substance,
- use of medications containing nitrates or releasing nitric oxide (used in cardiology),
- cardiovascular diseases (e.g., hypertension, atherosclerosis, varicose veins),
- liver diseases,
- recent stroke or heart attack within the last 6 months,
- low blood pressure,
- visual system disorders (e.g., retinitis pigmentosa),
- sickle cell anaemia (abnormal red blood cell structure),
- leukaemia (blood cell cancer),
- bone marrow cancer,
- penile deformity or Peyronie’s disease,
- gastric ulcers,
- haemophilia.
Side effects
Every medication can cause side effects . For these two substances (sildenafil and tadalafil), they are very similar. You will minimise them by using the medication as directed and at the correct dose.
Side effects of sildenafil or tadalafil:
- headache,
- Nausea,
- flushing, hot flashes,
- indigestion,
- nasal congestion,
- dizziness,
- heartburn,
- diarrhoea,
- nosebleeds,
- sleep disturbances (e.g., difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep)
- numbness, burning or tingling in arms, hands, feet, or legs,
- muscle pain,
- visual changes (seeing a blue tint on objects or difficulty distinguishing blue from green),
- light sensitivity.
Some adverse reactions can be serious. If any of the following symptoms occur, you should contact a doctor immediately:
- painful erection or one lasting longer than 4 hours,
- sudden, severe loss of vision,
- blurred vision,
- sudden decrease or loss of hearing,
- ringing in the ears,
- dizziness or photophobia,
- fainting,
- chest pain,
- worsening shortness of breath,
- itching or burning during urination,
- rash.
Serious adverse reactions are rare and occur in fewer than 1 in 1000 people . You will reduce the risk of their occurrence by taking the medication as intended and at the proper dose. Remember to read the leaflet included with the packaging!
How to naturally improve potency?
You lack desire for sex, are tired, stressed, and overwhelmed. Before reaching for erectile pills, carefully examine your lifestyle and diet.
Without changes in physical activity, diet, and mindset, you will not have a satisfying sex life. Find out what you can do to improve your health – not just sexual health!
Vary your diet
Have you heard about a diet for potency? These are not exotic products imported from the other side of the world or expensive, hard-to-find ingredients. You will be surprised when you read about what to include in your diet to improve sexual performance.
Dietitian Julia Skrajda recommends:
- nuts, pumpkin seeds,
- seafood (e.g., oysters, shrimp, lobsters),
- wholegrain bread,
- brown rice,
- lean poultry meat of good quality,
- fatty fish (e.g., salmon),
- vegetables (e.g., asparagus, broccoli)
- berry fruits (e.g., blueberries, strawberries),
- dark cocoa,
- spices – ginger, turmeric, basil, coriander, nutmeg, vanilla, anise, pepper.
Add these products to your shopping list and prepare a romantic dinner with your loved one!
A diet supporting potency should also promote a man's well-being. It is recommended to be easily digestible, free of fatty and fried foods, highly processed foods, and fast food. These tasty but unfortunately harmful products burden the body, drain energy, and promote the development of many diseases.
Julia SkrajdaDietitian
A review of scientific studies from 2018 suggests that the best diet to support sexual health is the Mediterranean diet. It involves consuming fish, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and whole grains in recipes.
Engage in lots of sports
Scientific studies suggest that regular moderate-intensity aerobic exercise helps reduce erectile dysfunction. Experts recommend activity lasting at least 40 minutes four times a week. This can be cycling, swimming, skipping, walking, or… sex!
Quit bad habits
Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking cigarettes, and other substance use can lead to erectile problems. How exactly do substances affect potency?
Smoking negatively impacts blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the penis, causing problems with erections.
An erection is a complex process involving the hormonal, nervous, and circulatory systems. Excessive alcohol consumption impairs their functioning, which can cause erectile issues.
A review of studies from 2020 suggests that up to 73% of men abusing alcohol experience autonomic nervous system dysfunction. The most common symptom is erectile dysfunction.
Drugs destroy physically and mentally. They can cause blood vessel constriction , preventing enough blood from reaching the penis and decreasing interest in sex.
Reduce stress
I don’t like it when someone tells me: Don’t stress, relax. That’s why I won’t write it to you. Instead, I can advise what exactly you can do to truly reduce the impact of stress on your life (not just sexually!).
- Identify what stresses you. Name the problem. Work? Relationship tension? Feeling that life is slipping away? Chronic body pains?
- Think about how you can solve this problem. Consider talking to your employer, exploring other career paths, discussing with your partner, setting aside time just for yourself, or finding a good doctor.
- Start acting. Recognising what bothers you and having ideas on how to solve it is half the success. The other half is implementation. Talk to your employer or partner, schedule tests, go to the cinema, or call an old friend you haven’t seen in a while.
Get enough sleep
It’s hard to enjoy sex when you’re sleep-deprived and tired. Sleep disorders (insufficient quantity and quality, frequent awakenings at night, insomnia) can contribute to the development of many diseases, e.g., cardiovascular disease or obesity. Your sex life will also suffer.
Do you sleep the recommended 7–8 hours a day? Pay attention to your sleep and let your body regenerate. Rested body and mind will foster desire for sex and engagement in it.
If you have moderate sleep problems, consider supplementing with melatonin.
Learn more about its effects in the article End counting sheep. How does melatonin help with sleep?
Take care of the atmosphere
Many factors contribute to successful sex. Whether you’ve been in a relationship for years or are just discovering your sexuality with your partner – create an environment conducive to arousal.
I won’t suggest what you should do. I won’t encourage you to buy erotic lingerie, set up dozens of soy candles in the bedroom, or study elaborate sexual positions.
Talk openly with your partner about your expectations. Share what you desire and… make it happen. You’ll know best what you need.

FAQ
How long does an erection last after taking Viagra?
Viagra is a medication containing sildenafil, which begins to work within 30–60 minutes of ingestion, and its effect lasts up to 12 hours. Just to be clear: this does not mean you will have an erection for several hours. Simply, after appropriate stimulation, your penis will find it easier to achieve an erection because sildenafil facilitates blood flow to the penis.
Potency tablets and alcohol – is it safe?
No, you should not mix erectile dysfunction medications (erection aids) with alcohol. Alcohol can negatively affect the absorption and effectiveness of the medications, which may result in a lack of an erection.
Braveran or Mensil – which is better?
For supporting erection, the better over-the-counter choice is Mensil. The sildenafil contained within has scientifically proven efficacy in facilitating erection. Braveran is a dietary supplement containing natural ingredients, which may support the occurrence of an erection, but does not guarantee the same effectiveness as Mensil.
Is garlic good for erections?
Potentially yes – scientific studies involving humans and animals suggest that some compounds found in garlic may increase blood flow and improve vascular function. This could potentially help in achieving an erection.
Does Viagra work without arousal?
No, Viagra does not work without arousal. Viagra, which contains sildenafil, will not work without proper stimulation. Simply taking the tablet does not induce an erection, and the medication does not affect libido (sexual desire). Sildenafil only improves blood flow, including to the penis, making it easier to achieve an erection through stimulation.
How do potency tablets work?
Potency medications contain active substances from the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors group. They increase blood flow to the penis while simultaneously reducing blood outflow from the organ, which facilitates achieving and maintaining an erection and allows for intercourse.
Does Viagra delay ejaculation?
No, Viagra does not delay ejaculation. It may indirectly boost confidence and overall sexual satisfaction, which could result in a longer duration of intercourse. It does not have a direct effect on preventing ejaculation. Sildenafil-based medications improve penile blood circulation and help achieve and sustain an erection; however, they do not address issues related to premature ejaculation. Both types of problems should be discussed with a doctor or sexologist initially.
Can I buy potency tablets at the pharmacy?
Yes, you can purchase potency tablets at a pharmacy. The pharmacist can advise and assist in choosing the right product. A pharmacy is a trusted and legal source for such preparations. Although visiting a pharmacy might be embarrassing, it is the best place to make the purchase. Avoid online shops that sell medications which normally require a prescription without one.
Can I buy potency tablets at Rossmann?
No, Rossmann drugstores do not sell potency tablets. The best place to buy potency tablets is in physical or online pharmacies. This ensures the origin of the products is reliable.
How to help my husband with impotence?
To treat impotence, it is advisable to encourage your husband to blood tests and visits to a general practitioner and a sexologist. Understanding the problem, offering support, and being patient are very important. Psychotherapy or couples therapy may also be valuable solutions.
What are the best tablets for potency with hypertension?
The best potency tablets for hypertension are substances from the group of 5-phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil). They should be prescribed by an internist after consultation with a cardiologist.
What is good for potency over the counter?
Effective over-the-counter products for potency will contain ingredients with proven effects on sexual health. For medications, these are preparations containing DHEA. Dietary supplements do not guarantee such effects as medications, but it is worth considering products containing ginseng, L-arginine, maca root, and tribulus.
