Diamond, gold, platinum, silver, graphite and... Vegan. There is something for everyone. Plus a supplement in capsules. The names of the products that Colway offers sound great, and the manufacturer praises them even more.

This is why we decided to take them under the microscope. Together with Ilona Krzak, M.Sc. in Pharmacy, we will present an analysis of Colway's collagens.

The following is a review of the products.

.

From this article you will learn:

.
  • What collagen products Colway offers.
  • .
  • What quality they are.
  • .
  • And whether they are worth buying.
  • .

In analysing Colway collagens, we highlighted:

.

    .
  • Technologies used - standard collagen applied to the skin is unlikely to penetrate itand. We checked how the manufacturer's claims compare to current scientific knowledge.
  • Collagen origin - affects its quality, efficacy and  safety.
  • No unnecessary additives - a definite no to dyes, preservatives and unnecessary fragrances.
  • Additional active ingredients - more for the same amount? I'm buying!
  • User reviews - no one better to evaluate a product than unbiased users. Here you can see the full criteria.
  • .

Collagen (English: collagen) applied to the skin will not penetrate into the dermis (its molecules are too large) and will only externally support the skinand. However, the manufacturer Colway claims to use ground-breaking, innovative technology. It asserts that the pure proteins in their formulations, are able to penetrate the skin.

.

What is molecular weight?

Molecular mass is the sum of the masses of the atoms in a molecule, measured in Da (daltons). Put simply: it is the way chemists measure the size of molecules.

Colway cites a study that suggests that collagen with a mass of 3500-4500 Da absorbs better than other moleculesand. Only the issue gets more complicated. According to research and what the pharmacist says, the pure collagen proteins that Colway communicates it uses have a molecular weight of between 120 000 and 300 000 Da . Previous scientific knowledge suggests that such large molecules have no right to penetrate the dermis.

This means:

.

If the collagen protein used in the product is indeed unprocessed, then it will not penetrate the dermis.

There is also some inconsistency in the communication. The study cited by Colway was not conducted on humans ... only on animal skin sections. It is therefore difficult to say in good conscience that the behaviour of this protein will be similar in humans.

Furthermore, this study mentions hydrolysed collagen, while Colway emphasises that it offers native collagen and suggests that it is the hydrolysate that has problems with absorption.

Colway claims that their collagen is distinguished by the presence of trihelis in an intact form. This structure is the hallmark of a natural youth protein.

In short, this means, the Colway collagen you buy to apply to your skin is unlikely to be absorbed (it can only provide gentle, external support).

And what about the rest?"

You are probably now wondering where Natural Collagen Silver and Graphite are. We will not include them in the analysis as they are identical products to Natural Collagen Platinum. The formulations have the same ingredients and differ only in name and price. For 200 ml of Natural Collagen Graphite you will pay PLN 327, while the exact same product (packaged in a different marketing) already costs PLN 547 (Natural Collagen Platinum).

Interested in the subject, I decided to contact Colway directly. When asked how the products differ, I received the following response: "The products differ in the degree of pigment purification. The more times it is passed through the mulberry silkworm's screens, the less of it it contains and, consequently, the more expensive it is".

What does this actually mean?"

Pharmacist, Ilona Krzak replied that this passing through the silkworm screens has a positive effect on the purity of the collagen. She added that by doing so, Colway has confirmed that it uses natural collagen in its products. Yes, the one with a molecular weight of 120 000-300 000 Da. And yes, the one that will not penetrate your skin according to current scientific knowledge.

Pharmacist's review of Colway gel collagen

The manufacturer Colway writes on its website: "Natural collagen is a gel formed by fish collagen molecules that attach water molecules in the process of hydration (a discovery of Polish biochemistry). The only 'living' (retaining the triple helix conformation) protein preparation in world cosmetology".

.
Collagen retaining the triple helix conformation usually has about 120 000 - 300 000 Da, so it is nowhere near the range of well-absorbable collagen 3500-4500 Da from the study quoted by the manufacturer. In addition, the study mentions hydrolysed collagen all the time, which is challenged by the manufacturer as being macromolecular. Where is the truth? I don't think Colway itself knows.
Ilona Krzak.

.

The manufacturer Colway also states that "Fish collagen at the molecular stage is characterised by transdermality - impossible in cases of large molecules of hydrolysed collagens - and an almost identical structural structure to human collagen."

.
The aforementioned large particles of hydrolysed fish collagen can be as small as 600 Da, which is an incomparably smaller size compared to natural collagen (or native collagen), whose molecular weight is around 120,000-300,000 Da.

.

In addition to collagen gels, Colway also offers you a dietary supplement. Is it better here? Yes, but... Not much.

.

Why it's worth it:

  • Content of tocopherol (a derivative of vitamin E) covers the daily requirement of this vitamin in adults.
  • Liophilised collagen taken orally can support health and beauty from the inside out.
  • Algae have been shown to have a positive effect on the health and beauty of the body.
  • Algae exhibit anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.
  • .

Please note:

  • There is no information on the form of collagen (hydrolysate or natural). However, the MSc emphasises that regardless of the type, the protein content is low.
  • .
  • In the patent that the manufacturer states, there is no word about freeze-drying (this is a process that should aim to 'concentrate' the collagen in the capsule).
  • .
  • No information on the origin and type of marine algae.

Summary

.

Colway collagens are a bit of an unknown. The manufacturer provides conflicting information on the website. The studies it mentions are for hydrolysed collagen, which is treated by the manufacturer. The studies that suggest that non-hydrolysed collagen is absorbed through the skin were done on animals and stand in opposition to the rest of the scientific literature on the absorbability of collagen molecules. The 2022 breakthrough technology was filed with the Polish Patent Office in 2003. What to think about all this? I can only leave the conclusions to you.

FAQ

.
. What is collagen good for? .

Collagen has many benefits that can improve the look and condition of your body. Here are some of its benefits:

  • firming, elasticising and hydrating skin,
  • .
  • strengthening hair,
  • .
  • reduction of nail brittleness,
  • .
  • improving the function of joints,
  • .
  • supporting immunity,
  • .
. What are the symptoms of collagen deficiency?

Notable symptoms of collagen deficiency include:

  • deterioration of skin,
  • .
  • weakening of hair and nails,
  • .
  • lower immunity,
  • .
  • muscle and joint pain,
  • .
  • longer recovery time after illness,
  • .
  • disorders of appetite,
  • .

To avoid these problems, it is advisable to focus on prevention, not on subsequent treatment. Consuming high-quality dietary supplements containing collagen can help. Examples of such products include: Natu.Care premium collagen, Colladrop Flex, Sundose Collagen, Colladrop Forte.

. Does collagen have side effects? .

Side effects of collagen supplementation are rare. Some of them are: allergic reactions or digestive problems. With collagen injections, side effects also include swelling, redness, infection, skin reactions, and scarring.

. Is it better to take collagen in the morning or in the evening? .

Take collagen at your convenience - the time of day does not affect the effectiveness of collagen supplementation. The key is regularity, which leads to healthy nails, firm skin and shiny hair.

. Can you drink collagen every day? .

Yes, you can drink collagen every day. Take the recommended dosage (2.5-15 g per day) for at least 3-6 months to notice improvements in skin, hair, nails and joints. Additionally, consume foods rich in vitamin C, which supports collagen production.

. What is the difference between fish collagen and regular collagen? .

Fish collagen differs from standard collagen in origin and structure. Marine collagen is obtained from marine raw materials (primarily skin and skeleton) and is used in supplements and cosmetic products. Normal collagen, on the other hand, is a component of the human and animal body.

. What flushes collagen out of the body? .

The most important factor that reduces collagen levels in the body is ageing. Other elements that affect the reduction of collagen include:

  • oxidative stress,
  • .
  • UV radiation,
  • .
  • insufficient vitamin and mineral intake,
  • .
  • cigarette addiction,
  • .
