Media about us:

It is your main building block - you've been safely communing with collagen all your life and everything is OK (well, apart from having less of it in your body every year).

You eat it in your Sunday broth. When the cold legs come in for Christmas. Or when someone finally asks for a pork knuckle.

You eat it in the Sunday broth.

Although... maybe you don't eat it at all, because such dishes make you want to push the plate away and get up from the table.

You think of supplements.

You're thinking about collagen supplementation, but have doubts. Together with pharmacist Ilona Krzak, we take a look at the safety issues (positive spoiler: for the absolute majority of us, there are no contraindications) and show you who should be more vigilant.

The following is a good example of how to be more vigilant.

From this article you will learn:

  • Whether you can take collagen.
  • What side effects can occur with collagen supplementation.
  • Which foods are rich in collagen.

Contraindications to the use of collagen

Collagen supplements are generally considered safe  for most people. Collagen is simply a protein, a macronutrient like the protein in cheese and meats. The absolute majority of us will never have a problem (unless, for example, you have a severe allergy to pork and the collagen you buy is pork - but that should go without saying).

What's more, most products on the market are de facto hypoallergenic. The process of hydrolysis that collagen in supplements usually undergoes - significantly reduces the allergenicity of the raw material from which the preparation is derived.

In certain rare situations, a modicum of caution will be needed. This is mainly due to the fact that collagen supplements also contain additional active substances that can complicate life for, for example, allergy sufferers or people taking medication.

Precautions against collagen supplements may be necessary.

Possible contraindications to taking collagen include:

  • severe allergies to products from which collagen is derived (e.g. pork),
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding period,
  • kidney and liver diseases,
  • taking medication,
  • autoimmune disorders,
  • some skin diseases,
  • gastrointestinal problems,

If you have any doubts about taking new medications or supplements (not just collagen supplements), consult your doctor.

Allergies

People with allergies to certain collagen sources (e.g. fish, shellfish, beef or chicken) should avoid collagen supplements that are formulated with them. What's more, collagen supplements often have additional ingredients (e.g. vitamins and minerals), which can be a problem if it is these that you are allergic to. Therefore, always check all elements of a particular supplement before you start taking it .

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There are no clear, carved-in-stone contraindications. Given that this time is a sensitive time for the health of both baby and mum, it is worthwhile to consult your GP for decisions about a particular supplement.

It has been observed that excessive amounts of type 1 collagen are deposited in women with pre-eclampsia.Further research is underway to elucidate this mechanism.

Kidney diseases

People with kidney disease may need to limit their intake of protein, and therefore collagen. Ask your healthcare professional's opinion before using collagen supplements if you have kidney problems .

Liver problems

If you suffer from liver disease, you may have difficulty absorbing various supplements, including collagen ones. However, this doesn't mean you 100% have to give up on them - take advice from your doctor or pharmacist, they will be happy to clear up your concerns.

Interactions with medications

Collagen supplements (like all other remedies) can potentially interact with certain medications, leading to reduced efficacy or negative side effects. This is more about additional active ingredients such as vitamins and minerals than the protein itself. Consult your doctor if you are taking any prescription medications or have concerns about potential interactions .

Autoimmune disorders

Some people with autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma, need to be cautious with collagen supplementation because of the potential for immune system overreaction .

Dermal diseases

Collagen may be contraindicated in people with skin diseases related to the healing process, such as keloids or over-healing wounds.

Keloids are the uncontrolled growth of scar tissue beyond the boundaries of the original wound, while excessive healing wounds can lead to skin deformity and loss of function.

In such cases, the use of collagen may be contraindicated to avoid worsening existing conditions or causing adverse skin reactions.

Gastrointestinal problems

Some people may experience mild gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, gas or diarrhoea when taking collagen supplements. If you already have gastrointestinal problems, be careful about taking collagen .

Such delicate, yet awkward, troubles can potentially be addressed by determining when and how to drink collagen. Perhaps it's best for you to consume it with a meal? Perhaps it's better after? If you don't have a serious medical condition, you can probably afford such healthy experiments.

Drinking collagen - side effects

When drinking collagen, you may experience side effects such as allergies (skin rash, chest pains, shortness of breath), gastrointestinal problems (e.g. feeling full, heartburn, ulcers), an unpleasant aftertaste in the mouth, sour breath, muscle or joint pain and general weakness of the body .

Remember, however, that drinking collagen is most often safe and has no side effects. The above side effects are rare. They occur in a small group of people, are most often mild and subside once the supplement is discontinued.

How to safely supplement collagen in the body, or sources of youth protein in the diet

If you have one or more of the contraindications to taking collagen, it is worth enriching your diet with collagen-rich foods. Some of these include:

  • cicken feet, pork knuckle, brawn,
  • broth on beef or pork bones,
  • fish or chicken with skin,
  • guts - e.g. heart, liver, kidney,
  • products with food-grade gelatine (e.g. fruit, vegetable jellies).
  • Products with food-grade gelatine (e.g. fruit, vegetable jellies).

Please remember not to eat too much of these foods - they can be very calorific, and they also contain a lot of cholesterol (excess of which can lead to problems with the liver, for example).

In addition to collagen-rich products, it is equally important to support your body in its production. These vitamins and minerals can help you with this:

Manufacturers are outdoing themselves with ideas and producing vege collagen. However, this is not real collagen, but a mixture of amino acids and peptides extracted from plants.

What not to combine collagen for drinking with?

Drinking collagen can be combined with any liquid: water, milk, cereal drink or even coffee. If you are consuming large doses of collagen supplements and other protein supplements, consider potentially limiting the amount of protein you consume to not exceed approximately 2.2 grams per kg of body weight.

Can collagen be drunk with coffee?

Coffee and the caffeine contained in it may reduce the absorption of some vitamins and minerals . If these are the active ingredients in your supplement, maintain an interval of 30-60 minutes between the small black and the collagen.

Degradation of collagen peptides occurs at temperatures above 150ºC . The temperature of your coffee will not exceed 100ºC, so you don't need to worry about losing protein structure. However, boiling water can reduce the concentration of vitamins such as vitamin C , which is a popular active ingredient in supplements.

Summary

In summary

  • The main contraindications to collagen supplementation are allergies to the ingredients of the supplements, pregnancy and lactation.
  • Some side effects when taking collagen may include: abdominal pain, stomach problems, allergies.
  • Eating chicken feet, chicken with the skin on and broth on the bones will provide you with collagen.
  • Eat foods rich in vitamin C to increase your body's production of collagen.

FAQ

Do you get fat from collagen

Collagen doesn't make you fat - as a protein, it can even promote feelings of satiety and aid weight control, so go ahead and consume collagen in supplement form and enjoy a varied diet of amino acid-rich foods (meat, fish, eggs) to support the condition of skin, hair, joints and nails.

Is drinking collagen safe?

Yes, drinkable collagen is safe. However, always make sure you choose a high quality product that is free from artificial additives. Read labels, choose collagen with high bioavailability, such as hydrolysed.

Monitor your body's reactions and discontinue use immediately if there is an allergy or intolerance. The best collagen on the market is: Natu.Care premium collagen, Colladrop Flex, Sundose collagen, or Colladrop Forte.

What destroys collagen in the body?

Collagen in the body is degraded for various reasons. The most important of these is the passage of time, which results in the progressive loss of the protein of youth. You are not able to stop the years running, but you can protect yourself from other factors that weaken collagen. Among these are worth mentioning:

  • UV radiation (use screen creams!),
  • inadequate diet (deficiency of vitamins and minerals),
  • smoking,
  • excessive consumption of coffee,
  • inadequate hydration of the body,
  • abuse of alcohol,
