What is Norwegian collagen?

.

Norwegian collagen is a type of collagen extracted from marine fish, mainly from their skins and bonesand. It is most often sourced from fish caught in the clear, frigid waters of Norway, which translates into a high quality and pure product. Norwegian collagen is also known as fish collagen or sea collagen.

Fish collagen is distinguished by its unique structure - similar to that in your body. As a result, it is quickly and effectively absorbed into the body, better than, for example, beef collagenand.

Fish collagen improves the appearance and condition of skin, hair and nails, and supports the functioning of the musculoskeletal systemand. After the age of 25, the body's natural production of collagen declines, so many people opt for supplementation to stop collagen deficiency symptomsand.

Norwegian and "Norwegian"

.

The adjective "Norwegian" gives the manufacturer +10 points to marketing. It's well-known - clear waters, pink salmon and handsome fishermen. However, a tempting name is not enough. Collagen should be certified, e.g. by the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) and have information about the collagen formula and its origin, e.g. Seagarden, Verisol F or Collagen HM™.

Certifications ensure that you are consuming a quality product, not sourced from dirty pseudo-farms, and the makers of fish collagen formulas adhere to strict requirements on the quality of the raw material and its sourcing.

.
The structure of collagen can vary depending on its sources and even the seasons, which can affect its use. Therefore, it is important that collagen is certified.
.

Unfortunately, some dietary supplement manufacturers stretch the Norwegian origin of their product like a tarpaulin from a beetle. There is no collagen from fish, but from cattle, and the "Norwegianness" of the supplement touts, for example, the fish oil in the formulation, which serves as a carrier or source of omega-3 acids.

.

Summary

.

Norwegian collagen is otherwise known as marine collagen or fish collagen (English: marine collagen), which is derived from the skins or bones of fish. A good quality product has the appropriate quality and legal catch certificates and a specific collagen formula. "Norwegian" in a product name does not always indicate high quality.

What should a good Norwegian collagen have?

Why yes? Everything is explained by the results of scientific research to date.

  • Fish collagen is structurally similar to human collagen, so it has a high bioavailability - meaning it will assimilate more quickly and effectively in your bodyand.
  • .
  • The patented formula has strict manufacturing procedures and quality standards. If the manufacturer has used Seagarden or Verisol, they are sure to boast about it on the packaging.
  • Fluid form is the best absorbed form of collagenand. It is absorbed into the body faster and more efficiently than, for example, collagen in capsules + more collagen will fit into one measure of powder or liquid. Swallowing 6 capsules? No thanks.
  • The effective daily portion of collagen, which primarily has a positive effect on the condition and appearance of skin, hair and nails, is 2500 mg. This portion is the most commonly tested in studiesand.
  • .
  • Additional active ingredients are welcome if they enhance the effects of the preparation or the collagen itself. The best source for collagen is vitamin C, which supports the body's production of collagen.
  • .
  • Certificates confirm that the manufacturer has a conscience as clear as the waters of the Atlantic right from the moment of legal, sustainable fishing.

Norwegian collagen - best products

.

The following collagen supplements meet the above criteria. They do not have "Norwegian" in the name, but that is not the issue here, but rather the origin of the fish and its quality.

What about supplements with "Norwegian" in the name?

.

With Ilona Krzak, MSc in pharmacy, I took a look at some popular dietary supplements that are called Norwegian collagen. We checked how much 'Norwegianness' they actually have in them.

The products we evaluated are:

  • Pharmatech Norwegian collagen,

  • MyVita Silver collagen Beauty (on the packaging: Norwegian collagen of natural origin),
  • .
  • MyVita collagen Flex+ (on the packaging: hydrolysed Norwegian collagen),
  • .

Chondroitin, glucosamine, vitamin C

Promoted as Norwegian collagen for joints. High daily dose and good form + solid amount of vitamin C. On the downside, no certification and low amounts of the other active ingredients that are supposed to help joints.

The packaging may say that the collagen is derived from Norwegian citizen salmon, which was the pinkest of the school. Unfortunately - no indication of formula and origin, and low daily portions (as much as a salmon can eat) are not a good choice.

That's why pay attention to the whole composition - from the daily portion, to the type of collagen and the certification stamp. Let's not kid ourselves - collagen is not one of the cheapest supplements, so if you have to spend the money, it's better to bet on quality, right?

.

Properties of Norwegian collagen

.

Regular consumption of collagen replenishes this valuable youth protein in the body. What does collagen help and what effects of drinking collagen can you expect?

Norwegian collagen:

.

Improves the appearance of your skin

.

Your skin is made up of more than 70% collagen, which is its basic building block. Less collagen means less elastic and resilient skin prone to stretch marks, for example. This is also why you get the first fine lines and wrinkles and your skin loses its firmnessand.

According to numerous scientific studies, regular collagen supplementation increases skin hydration and improves skin tone, which reduces wrinkles and improves elasticityand. In addition, collagen can accelerate wound healing (e.g. after injury, acne) and reduce the appearance of cellulite or stretch marks .

.

Influences hair condition

.

Collagen supports hair-building proteins, including keratin, which is responsible for hair structure and quality. Supplementing with collagen can strengthen the hair shaft, promote new hair growth and prevent hair loss.

Collagen supplementation can improve the mechanical resistance and thickness of hair fibres, so they won't be as brittle and fragileand. By moisturising the scalp, the scalp will be the ideal environment for hair growth.

.
Collagen supplementation stimulates fibroblast and keratinocyte migration, as well as vascularisation and epidermal growth. A healthy scalp promotes strong hair.
.
Ilona Krzak.

Ilona Krzak Master of Pharmacy

.

.

Nail strengthening

.

Nails - like hair - are made up mainly of keratin. Taking collagen can improve the condition of the nail plate, give it elasticity and accelerate its growthand. Collagen is often recommended for nailsfatigued after a hybrid. Combined with good nail conditioners, it can restore their nice appearance faster.

Promotes musculoskeletal health

.

Collagen is involved in the production of joint lubricant, which reduces friction in the joints and rebuilds cartilage tissue. Regularly drinking collagen improves joint flexibility and increases joint mobilityand.

.
Fish collagen peptide and glucosamine, which are present in large quantities in connective tissue, help to maintain the structure and integrity of cartilage. Their combined action provides the greatest protection against osteoarthritis.
.
Ilona Krzak.

Ilona Krzak Master of Pharmacy

.

.

Collagen plays an important role in maintaining muscle strength and endurance and promoting muscle regeneration. It can increase muscle mass in people with sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss)and.

It is also an ally of strong bones, as collagen gives them structure. It increases bone density and strengthens bones, which can reduce bone degradation .

.
Some factors associated with sport (e.g. impact, strain and overload), increase the risk of joint injury. Collagen can be a helpful dietary support for active people due to its positive effects on the entire musculoskeletal system.
Marta Kaczorek.

Marta Kaczorekclinical nutritionist and personal trainer

.

.

Helps the immune system

.

Collagen provides the body with valuable amino acids, such as proline, lysine and glutamine, which supports the proper functioning of the immune systemand.

Remember the well-known phrase that up to 80% of immune cells are found in the gut? Collagen improves the health of your gut, which not only affects your digestive system, but also your immune system.

.
Collagen supports the regeneration of the intestinal or gastric mucosa. Its supplementation is beneficial for inflammation. I recommend it to people who are struggling with, for example, stomach ulcers or intestinal diverticula.

How is Norwegian collagen obtained?

.

Norwegian collagen (also known as marine or fish collagen), is extracted from the bones, scales and skin of marine fish. The most common are tilapia, cod, salmon, tunaand. The process of extracting collagen involves several steps:

  • Fishing: legal fishing is carried out in accordance with sustainable fishing practices that aim to protect fish populations, marine resources and ecosystems, while keeping in mind the needs of commercial fisheries.
  • Fishing: legal fishing is carried out in accordance with sustainable fishing practices that aim to protect fish populations, marine resources and ecosystems while keeping in mind the needs of commercial fisheries.
  • Procurement of raw material: Fish collagen is extracted primarily from the skins, bones and other connective tissues of fish. The sourcing of raw material usually takes place in fish processing plants when the fish are already prepared for further food production.
  • Cleaning and purification: the raw material is washed and cleaned to remove any remaining organic components, membranes, impurities and bacteria.
  • .
  • Hydrolysis: In this phase, collagen is hydrolysed, i.e. broken down into smaller fragments - collagen peptides. The process is carried out using enzymes or chemicals that break down the larger collagen structures into smaller, more easily digestible molecules.
  • Filtration and sedimentation: hydrolysed collagen molecules are filtered and purified to remove any undesirable substances and obtain high-quality collagen peptides.
  • Drying: purified fish collagen is dried to reduce the water content and further maintain the quality and shelf life of the product. The drying process is usually done by spraying, larger particle vacuum drying or by freeze drying (drying by freezing and sublimation).
  • Packaging: dried fish collagen is packaged and labelled according to quality and regulatory standards. It is packaged in powder, tablet or capsule form, which manufacturers then use in their dietary supplements.
  • .
.

Zero waste

Fish skin, bones and scales are a rich source of collagen, but are often discarded by the seafood processing industry. By using marine collagen, the amount of usable waste is reduced and no further organisms are harmed during collagen isolation.

Fish versus snapper. Which fish is best?

.

Producers are going fin to fin in the race for the title of the best fish from which to extract collagen. The most commonly used fish species areand:

  • fish,
  • .
  • spotted snapper,
  • .
  • sum,
  • .
  • Nile tilapia,
  • .
  • southern catfish,
  • .
  • hair,
  • .
  • sardines,
  • .

These fish species have been tested for collagen extraction and are considered suitable sources due to their high youth protein content and availability. Remember, however, that the specific collagen extraction process and the quality of the collagen also affect the suitability of a particular fish species as a youth protein source.

.
Each fish has a different skin thickness and skeleton size, which affects the collagen content. Cod often appears in dietary supplements because it is a popular and frequently caught fish.
.
Ilona Krzak.

Ilona Krzak Master of Pharmacy

.

.

How the fish are fed and caught is also crucial. Wild-caught fish that feed naturally are best. They are not 'on steroids' and do not eat waste, to put it mildly. Stories of fish raised in puddles and fed on faeces are not urban legends.

Who is Norwegian collagen for?

.

Supplementation with collagen of fish origin will be helpful if:

    .
  • you are experiencing skin deterioration (e.g. wrinkles, loss of firmness, cellulite),
  • .
  • you want to improve the condition of your hair and nails,
  • .
  • you are a very physically active person,
  • .
  • you want to improve the functioning of your musculoskeletal system - joints, muscles and bones,
  • .

Contraindications

.

And who is Norwegian collagen not for? The collagen contraindications areand:

    .
  • allergies to ingredients in a particular formulation e.g. seafood,
  • .
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  • .
  • kidney problems,
  • .
  • taking permanent medication (consult your doctor).
  • .
.
People with diabetes should also be careful, as some collagen preparations contain sugar. The best choice would be those sweetened with stevia.
.

.

.

When will I see the effects of collagen?

.

You already know what collagen is best. Ba, you've even bought it or are just wiping the foam from your mouth after drinking it (fish collagen is nice to whip up). And now the most important thing: when do you get the effects?

The effects of collagen depend on your age, your health, the amount of collagen in your body, your diet, your addictions and your activities. Usually the first effects can be seen on the skin already after 8 weeks application.

In the following weeks, you should notice a stronger nail plate and improved hair condition. After a few months you may feel faster muscle recovery and less joint pain.

After a few months you may feel faster muscle recovery and less joint pain.

But remember, collagen (even 150% Norwegian collagen) will not firm your skin, strengthen your hair or prevent joint disease if you lead an unhealthy lifestyle. Don't put a stick in your spokes (or even in your collagen fibres) and sabotage yourself.

Side effects

.

Side effects with collagen supplementation are rareand. Some people may experience gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g. nausea, abdominal pain), which resolve after discontinuing the dietary supplement.

Marine collagen has many beneficial characteristics, such as small peptide size that is perfectly absorbed, biocompatibility with human collagen and safety - no fish-to-human transmissible diseases. On top of this, the use of marine waste (e.g. skin) to obtain collagen is eco-friendly. I am most in favour of this!

Summary

.

.
  • Norwegian collagen is the marketing term for fish-derived collagen, from raw materials extracted from pure Atlantic waters.
  • When looking for Norwegian collagen, you are actually looking for fish or marine collagen - they are the same thing.
  • When choosing collagen, pay attention to the daily serving, the collagen formula and the certifications that prove the quality of the supplement and its legal sourcing.
  • .
  • The best absorbed collagen is hydrolysed fish collagen in a daily serving of at least 2.5 g.
  • .
  • Trusted fish collagen formulations include Naticol, Verisol, PEPTAN and Seagarden. Their developers adhere to high manufacturing standards for their raw materials.

FAQ

.
. What are the symptoms of collagen deprivation? .

The symptoms of collagen deficiency areand:

  • deterioration of skin (dryness, wrinkles, sagging),
  • .
  • deterioration of hair (brittleness, breakage),
  • .
  • deterioration of the nail plate (splitting, brittleness),
  • .
  • pain and prolonged muscle recovery,
  • .
  • problems with the immune system,
  • .
  • problems with the musculoskeletal system (pains and diseases of joints),
  • .
. What is the best collagen?

The best collagens are distinguished by an effective daily serving of around 5-10 grams. They come in the form of hydrolysate and have additional active ingredients in the formulation to help the body synthesise collagen. The most powerful collagens include: Collagen Premium 10 000 mg Natu.Care, Colladrop Flex, Sundose collagen, or Colladrop Forte.

. What is the best collagen for joints? .

The best collagen for joints is hydrolysed fish collagen type I and hydrolysed collagen type II. Type I accounts for up to 90% of all collagen in the body, while type II is responsible for bone and cartilage tissue. Recommended collagen for joints include Natu.Care Collagen Premium 5000 mg, Aura Herbals Colladrop Flex and Collagen Peptides. It is advisable to choose drinkable collagen powder or liquid as it is absorbed more quickly.

. What not to combine collagen with .

Collagen supplementation should not be combined with alcohol consumption and smoking, as these addictions destroy collagen in the body. If you are taking medication on a regular basis, consult your doctor before starting supplements to avoid interactions. Supplements with collagen have other active ingredients in their formulations (vitamins and minerals) that may interact with medications.

. Are marine collagen and fish collagen the same protein? .

Yes, sea collagen and fish collagen are the same substance. The name fish collagen is more common in Poland and the 'marine' nomenclature refers to the English language. Fish collagen is referred to in this language as marine collagen, which is just marine collagen, but they are the same collagen protein.

. What time to drink collagen.

Drinking collagen should be tailored to your daily rhythm and encourage regularity. It is not important when is the best time to drink collagen, because this protein is easily absorbed, easily digestible and does not have a stimulating or sleep-inducing effect on the body. So you can drink it at any time of day.

. How long should you drink collagen?

To notice positive effects on skin, hair and nails, collagen should be drunk daily for three months. In many scientific studies, this is the period of time that produced visible and noticeable results. Start as early as after the age of 25, when the body's collagen production declines. It's never too late for collagen, you can benefit from its valuable properties even after 50. or 60 years of age.
