It has happened. Your body has started to lose collagen. The youth protein counter no longer indicates the full 100%. You now have about 98.5% left. You probably don't see any change yet. Your joints are hobbling as usual, your skin is firm and you can't see wrinkles.

Though this is the best time to start collagen supplementation. It will keep you that way for a long time. That's why, together with clinical nutritionist Julia Skrajda, we present the most important information about collagen for people over 25 years of age.

From this article you will learn:

  • How collagen works.
  • What are the best collagen supplements.
  • What the symptoms of collagen deficiency are.

How does collagen work?

Collagen provides support for various aspects of your health - from the appearance of your skin, to the health of your joints and even your gut Although your body produces collagen on its own, it does so less and less efficiently over time. It is around your 25th birthday that production declines.

Providing dietary collagen becomes more important. The quickest and most convenient way to ensure adequate levels of collagen is supplementation.

Effective collagen is the most important way to ensure adequate levels of collagen.

Effects of collagen supplementation include:

  • A reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Regular intake of collagen can have an anti-ageing effect, promoting skin regeneration and reducing wrinkles. Supplementation after the age of 25 can make the skin smoother and more supple, leading to a shallowing of fine lines and wrinklesand
  • Support for joint health. Collagen as an essential component of cartilage can prevent its degeneration. This leads to greater comfort and reduced joint pain. Collagen supplementation after the age of 25 can support healthy joint structure and function, as well as help regenerate connective tissueand
  • Hair and nail health. Collagen is essential for hair health, affecting hair density, strength and firmness. Taking collagen regularly after the age of 25 can promote hair growth and health. What's more, it can also influence greater nail strength and prevent breakage.
  • Growth of strength and muscle mass. Collagen influences the development of muscle tissue and can therefore contribute to greater strength and muscle mass. Collagen protein can support healthy muscle growth and function, especially for physically active peopleand
  • Accelerate wound healing. Collagen can affect the healing process of wounds, reducing the time needed for full recovery. Given that collagen is crucial to the body's regenerative processes, collagen supplementation after the age of 25 can support healthy epithelia and ensure proper wound healingand

How much collagen is in the body after age 25?

Most studies suggest that the body begins to deplete collagen at the age of 25. On average, the loss of this protein oscillates around 1.5 per cent per year, so you can assume that after the age of 25 there is still around 98.5 per cent collagen left in the bodyand

Note, the specific concentration of collagen in the body also depends on your lifestyle. An unhealthy diet, prolonged exposure to sunlight, alcohol consumption and smoking destroy collagen in the body

What are the symptoms of collagen deficiency?

Collagen deficiency in the body can lead to a variety of symptoms and health problems. Collagen is the main structural protein of our body and plays a key role in the structure of skin, hair, joints, bones and tendons.

Symptoms of collagen deficiency:

  • Wrinkles and loss of skin firmness. Collagen is responsible for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. As a result of its deficiency, the skin becomes thinner, wrinkles appear and skin flabbiness can occurand
  • Weakness of nails. Collagen deficiency can cause weakness, brittleness and splitting of nailsand
  • Weak and thinning hair. Collagen affects the strength and density of hair, and a lack of collagen can lead to weakening, thinning and hair lossand
  • Joint pain. Collagen provides adequate flexibility and function to joints. Deficiency of this protein can cause stiffness, pain, swelling and loss of mobilityand
  • Weak tendons and ligaments. Lack of collagen can lead to weakness and greater susceptibility to injury and stretching.

What collagen to choose after the age of 25?

When choosing a collagen supplement after the age of 25, the following aspects are worth considering:

  • Liquantity of collagen - effective products should contain between 2.5 and 15 grams of hydrolysed collagenand
  • Purity of ingredients -the absence of unnecessary preservatives, colours or other fillers is a big advantage.
  • Additional active ingredients - some vitamins and minerals (such as vitamin C) support collagen synthesis and its absorption by the body.
  • Scientifically researched -selected supplements have compositions confirmed by laboratory studies.
  • Form of supplement - you can choose from powders, liquids, tablets or creams; the latter is best avoided - see below for the reason.
  • Origin of collagen - there are manufacturers who source collagen from farmed fish, while others use wild animals, taking care of the ecosystem.
  • Taste - a small thing, but it's much easier to regularly supplement with a supplement that tastes and smells of mango than fish. Here you can see the full criteria

Are collagen creams effective?

Unfortunately, collagen creams do not work as we would like them to. Contrary to manufacturers' claims, collagen applied with a cream will not restore your complexion to a youthful appearance.

Collagen molecules are too large to reach deep enough. Collagen has a beneficial effect on skin hydration and firmness, but only on the surface of the skin. The resulting smoothness and softness of your skin is only a temporary effect.

Moisturising and smoothing are only superficial effects of collagen creams. These creams do not regenerate existing collagen in the skin, but only add a protective layer. The youth protein is too large to penetrate the layers of the epidermis.

What is hydrolysed collagen?

Hydrolysed collagen is a type of protein that is formed during the process of hydrolysis - the long chains of collagen are broken down into shorter collagen peptides with a smaller molecular weight

This makes collagen hydrolysate more easily absorbed by the body, and its peptides have beneficial effects on skin, hair, joints and the digestive systemand

What is freeze-dried collagen?

Lyophilised collagen is a product created by using freeze-drying, a process of freezing and evaporating water from natural collagen.

Liophilisation preserves the structure of the collagen protein and removes moisture, so it does not break downand

Which is better - hydrolysed or lyophilised?

In summary, the main differences between hydrolysed and freeze-dried collagen relate to the production processes and the resulting properties.

Hydrolysed collagen is more absorbable by the body. Freeze-dried collagen, on the other hand, retains the structure of the protein, which may affect its stability and shelf-life, but this information is not confirmed by studies.

It is difficult to say unequivocally which collagen is better. The number of scientific studies comparing hydrolysed with freeze-dried products is limited. Nevertheless, I would argue that it is the hydrolysed collagen that will prove to be more valuable. The better bioavailability by the body speaks in its favour.

Fish collagen vs bovine collagen - which one after 25 years of age?

There are two main types of collagen on the market - fish (marine) and bovine collagen. You may also come across porcine collagen, but this is rare and has similar properties to beefand

Preliminary animal studies indicate that taking beef collagen leads to an increase in the concentration of type I and type III collagen in the body, while using fish collagen benefits type I and type II proteins

Simply put, bovine collagen helps maintain skin health by increasing elasticity and reducing wrinkles. Conversely, sea collagen supports the overall health of the skin proper, nourishes hair, nails and cartilage

Which one is better?

Both types of collagen can be effective. However, research indicates that fish collagen is absorbed up to 50% more effectively than bovine collagenand

How to use collagen after the age of 25?

Apply collagen as directed by the manufacturer, doctor or pharmacist. Pay attention to the dosage, which can vary from product to product, and do not exceed the suggested values.

Excess collagen is a rare occurrence, but you may inadvertently exceed the recommended doses of other nutrients in supplements - such as vitamins or minerals

How long to supplement with collagen?

Using collagen for an extended period of time should not have any negative consequences. The first effects of collagen supplementation may be noticeable after about 8-24 weeks of regular use. Once you experience them, do not stop supplementation to stay in good shape.

If you do not experience positive effects after this period, consider swapping the product for another with better efficacy - for example, one containing 10,000 mg of hydrolysed collagen.

Contraindications to using collagen after the age of 25

Although collagen is usually safe, in some situations supplementation should be used with caution or discontinued.

Contraindications to collagen use after age 25 are:

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding period,
  • allergies to the ingredients of the preparation,
  • kidney and liver diseases,
  • adherence to selected medications,
  • some autoimmune disorders,
  • gastrointestinal problems,

Side effects with collagen supplementation

Collagen supplementation after the age of 25 can produce rare and mild side effects such as allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, swelling) or gastrointestinal complaints such as bloating or nausea. They usually subside when the dietary supplement is discontinued.

Is collagen vegan?

Collagen is an animal protein and therefore not suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Scientific work is ongoing on collagen derived from genetically modified yeast and bacteria. Research also aims to develop plant-based collagen, which could be produced from bamboo or rice, among others.

This is, however, preliminary work that needs further confirmation.

FAQ

Are there factors that damage collagen in our body?

Yes, the most important factor that destroys collagen in the body is the passage of time, but it is also worth avoiding others such as UV radiation, unhealthy diet, smoking, drinking a lot of coffee, dehydration, poor sleep hygiene and alcohol abuse.

To support collagen, consider supplements such as: collagen 5000 mg by Natu.Care, Colladrop Forte or collagen by Sundose

Does rice provide collagen?

No, rice is a plant and collagen is an animal protein. However, rice (especially brown rice) contains nutrients that are beneficial to health. Therefore, it is worth including it in your daily diet.

Are fruits rich in collagen?

No, collagen comes from animal tissue, so fruits will not provide you with it. However, fruit does contain vitamin C, which helps collagen production. Some fruits rich in vitamin C are citrus, kiwi, strawberries and papaya.

How to use collagen properly to drink it

Drinking collagen should be used as recommended by the manufacturer. Remember that the name 'drinkable collagen' includes liquid supplements and powders. Liquid supplements are ready to drink, while powders require dissolving in water or a vegetable drink.

Are nuts a source of collagen?

No, but they do contain ingredients that support collagen production, such as plant proteins, healthy fats and vitamins. It is worth adding nuts to your diet for better skin elasticity.

Does collagen clog veins?

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that collagen leads to vein clogging. In fact, collagen can have a positive effect on the circulatory system by strengthening the elasticity of blood vessels and improving their function.

When blood vessels are more flexible, blood can flow more easily, which increases blood supply to tissues and organs and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Are collagen proteins harmful to the liver?

No, collagen benefits the liver by promoting its regeneration and antioxidant activity. Research indicates that collagen proteins may help repair and regenerate liver cells.
